PODIATRY AND BIOMECHANICSPodiatry is the medical discipline that deals with the foot in health and disease. Bio mechanics is one aspect of podiatry. It addresses the alignment of the lower limb and its effect on normal movement and muscle balance. Pain and injury can arise when structures of the lower limb are not quite in line. This is referred to as 'mal-alignment'. If the foot does not strike the ground properly muscular strain and/or increased wear and tear on the joints can occur in the foot, ankle, shin, knee, hip or back. Poor foot mechanics can be treated successfully with 'orthotics', custom-made shoe inserts. These insoles re-align the foot or lower limb to an optimal position and help improve posture. They effectively relieve pain and prevent further joint damage in the long term. Just because your feet don't hurt doesn't mean they are not the cause of the problem.

ACUPUNCTUREAcupuncture has been used for over 3000 years. Here at Blunsdon Abbey Physiotherapy, we use both Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Western Acupuncture. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the view that Qi (energy) flows freely when the body is in a healthy state. If there is a problem, energy stagnates. The stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points frees this stagnation. Research has now shown that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain relieving chemicals - endorphins. These assist the body to heal itself and gain pain relief. We are able to offer acupuncture as part of a physiotherapy treatment programme and it can be used in conjunction with other treatment modalities, e.g. manual therapy exercises to achieve a beneficial outcome. Acupuncture can be used for many conditions, including:
All the physiotherapists here who use acupuncture are members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). They are committed to ongoing professional development and to maintaining the standards of clinical practice as developed by the AACP. |
